Rich are you going to be in New York for Fleet Week? I just tried to email you at that address you list below and there were "fatal errors". I guess that means it doesn't work anymore....

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

I actually I have to time to get on here. Anyways, merry freaking Christmas (It's Christmas where I'm at). I hope you all's Christmas' and New Years are a lot better than mine, ie not being on a ship floating somewhere around the Middle East. How's everyone? I wish I could tell you guys the stuff we're doing out here but at this time I can't due to operational security. Anyway, it's pretty lame; the same old shit every day just about. I joined the Navy to see the world and so far the world looks the same, blue as in water. We've been getting screwed in terms of port visits. Like early this month, we went to Djibouti, Djibouti, which is an African country. Because of the malaria problem there, we've been taking malaria pills since before we stopped there. Really really crappy place. Bosnia wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, especially compared to Djibouti. Djibouti wasn't all that bad though. The army has a base there and the base had a bar that could only sell a maximum of 3 drinks. It was nice to be able to drink. I also got promoted earlier in December before we pulled into Djibouti. The navy kind of sucks about promotions. We get the where the rank and have the title of the next rank but they don't pay us for that next rank for some time (it can be up to 6 months or so).

Anyways, email me any time. wheelerr@ramage.navy.mil

IHS Conference no. 6

I think I've definitely gone to too many of these things. I'm starting to see old participants from past seminars on a regular basis. This time it was this girl who got into a big Bush argument with me back in Emory and then this kind of know-it-all guy named Kevin who was also at Emory. Tom you should remember this guy. I think we've talked about him. He used to have a beard and was definitely called out by many people at our Emory seminar. Anyway both of them were pretty cool this time though.

The regular seminar was about career advancement and by the end of the weekend I felt like a total cheese salesman. They were very high on the whole Glengary Glenross abc's (always be closing). It was informative but a little much. Also I got my paper critiqued by the great Tyler Cowen. We had a session where everybody presented their work and he and another guy from VA (Gerard Alexander) just ripped into everybody. It was kind of fun.

But yeah didn't meet anyone that I will talk to afterwards and certainly no dorksgonewild type social groups. Oh well maybe in no. 7...

(x-posted to my own journal ... )

ugh, I am trying to write an abstract for my strategies class paper (just a short 1-page thing detailing what I will write about). However, at the moment, my idea for my paper is just a loose collection of thoughts centered around an aesthetically pleasing phrase, "framing public health as a moral good," and based solely on a post from pandagon.com, some jacob sullum writing, and my opinions. I mean, all i need is an outline, so it shouldn't be that hard, but ...

Okay. Help me out if you can, kids. My basic premise is that health has been fetishized as somehow being morally superior to non-health. and obviously, this all goes back to christianity (body is a temple, yadayadayada) and greek and roman and renaissance idealizations of the human body. i guess what I want to get into is the way that health is framed as morally superior in regard to certain contemporary issues, like obesity, eating disorders, and smoking, specifically. Maybe a few others -- can you guys think of any other issues where this applies?

.... because what I'm thinking about is how there is no inherent rightness or goodness about health, you know? i mean, outside of religiosity. i guess if you believe that your body is a gift from god, then keeping it healthy is your moral obligation. but if not, then, i mean, it's your body. you can do whatever the fuck you want with it, and there's no inherent rightness or wrongness in that. and I think it's interesting, though, the way, say, fat people, or smokers, are sort of framed in public health debates as being somehow morally deficient, and in the converse, anorexics and other extreme disordered eating behavior is held up as an ideal, because it represents a victorian concept of restraint, the moral goodness of restraint in and of itself ...

i don't know, just, any thoughts you have, please .... or suggestions for any writers/books/blogs/articles you've seen relating to all this?

We pulled into Neum, Bosnia yesterday, the only city in Bosnia on a coast. It's a small touristy town (too bad tourist seasoon has passed) but in a very beautiful area. I'll post pictures when we get back from deployment.

Adam is right - this place is sad. How is everyone? Liz/Adam, are you liking school? Tom/Destin, how are the jobs? Rich, how is the military/girlfriend? The job here is good - but taking over my life. I was at work 2 nights in a row until 2 am last week. And I only hang out with people from work - except of course when I try to watch a football game at the local Irish pub in Williamsburg where everyone else is far more tattooed, pierced, or Jewish than me.

Life is good.

Wow this site's starting to look dead. Well here's something that could spark interest. Have you ever wanted to know what the 10th dimension is like or the first 9 for that matter. Check out this link:

http://www.tenthdimension.com/flash2.php

I watched it stoned last night and it was great.
